Beer gardens have been around since the 19th century in Munich, Germany. Little did we know in Colorado, 5,228 miles away and several hundred years later, we would have our own beer garden. The Lowery Beer Garden (LBG) opened Memorial Day of 2012 and has even hopped out to another location, Green Valley Ranch (GVR Beer Garden) because of its growing popularity. Housed in the service building for hanger #2 of the renovated Lowry Airforce base with a B-52 (Wings over the Rockies) almost in throwing distance from the front door, the Lowry Beer Garden is a frequent tap house for a very diverse neighborhood community. With a capacity of 350, it becomes a great spot for a beer (who does that) or to host a party of Marines.
The Lowry Beer Garden has hosted several incredible events over the last couple of years – Oktoberfest, Ugly Sweater Party and much more. 2016 holds some exciting opportunities for beers lovers across Denver and beyond. The biggest of these will be the Summer Music series, starting June 18th and running the following 13 Saturdays with local bands like the Latitude Experience band and Jarkata. Saturdays aren’t the only day you can find something going on at LBG – Mondays is Poker night (free to play) and starting at 7:30pm, Tuesday nights are for Geeks Who Drink and coming soon is Cards Against Humanity (TBD). I almost forgot that this is a family setting. Ice cream and play area dedicated to those under 21, although I have seen a few Dad types playing in the sand with the munchkins. One could not forget the kids dancing outside to the light display during Christmas while singing carols. Containers of hot chocolate and occasionally someone walking around with s’mores to prepare over the open flame, all of which cause smiles just like with me and beer. Casey Kirk, the Assistant General Manager was able to sit down with me for a few minutes to talk about the LBG which he has called home since 2013. He explained that working with the City Street Investors, who are the owners of the Denver beer gardens, has been a truly phenomenal experience. Together with a great staff and the help of Justin T., culinary genius and Jeff H., tapster/mixologist extraordinaire makes every aspect satisfying, rewarding and fun. Being a follower of beer, I can’t imagine a better place to be. So if you are interested in an elk brat, bison burger or a great craft beer experience, here in Colorado with euro style feel – The Lowry Beer Garden should be on your list. It doesn’t matter if you just stop in for a beer or one of the many activities, you will quickly get a feel of community and home. Well my hat is off to Joe, Pat and Rod for bringing a Germany concept to Colorado in such an amazing fashion. Thank you and Cheers!
